8/12/2026 - Newark Fatal Water Rescue on Passaic River

At around 17:30 on Wednesday the 12th the Newark Fire Department was made aware of a man that was reported to have jumped into the Passaic River near the Jackson Street Bridge. Crews searched the river and at around 20:30 crews located the body of the victim near the point it was reported he jumped off. Shortly after divers from the Mahwah fire department were sent out on Newark Fire Boat 2 to attempt to recover the body. At 22:19 divers were pulled out of the water unable to make the recovery, crews packed up for the night and will be going back tomorrow for another attempt.
