Newark Fire Leaves Dozens Displaced

At 20:00 the Newark Fire Department dispatched a full assignment to 801 Summer Ave for a house fire, and by 20:40 had alerted the County, with initial reports of people trapped inside. Battalion 3 reported a 2 1/2 story frame with fire showing and requested NPD for traffic control. At 20:07 there was water on the fire but crews faced water pressure problems. At 20:10 Deputy 1 assumed command, reporting fire on the Delta and Bravo sides with possible exposure problems, and a second alarm was declared shortly after. By 20:13, command structure was set, Deputy 1 as command, Battalion 3 operations chief, Battalion 1 interior operations chief, Battalion 2 safety officer, and Battalion 5 exposure chief, with second alarm units directed to the command post. At 20:48 a Bloomfield engine and Montclair truck were dispatched for the cover assignment, followed shortly by a South Essex engine, Millburn engine, and Irvington truck; Nutley was dispatched in place of Montclair, which couldn't provide a truck company. All coverage units were in place in Newark by 21:01-21:09. At 20:56 the fire was placed under control with a completed PAR check showing all companies accounted for, and command reported extensive overhaul. South Essex, Millburn, and Irvington were released from coverage at 21:51, followed by Bloomfield and Nutley at 22:35. 21 adults and 5 children were displaced, and 5 dogs unfortunately passed away.
