One Dead After Trench Collapse in Dallas

DALLAS, Texas — A 29-year-old construction worker died Monday afternoon after becoming trapped beneath an apartment building following a dirt collapse at the Sage Hill at Cypress Waters apartment complex in northwest Dallas. According to Dallas Fire-Rescue, crews responded around 3:19 p.m. to the apartment complex located at 2275 Sage Hill Lane after receiving reports of a worker trapped underground. Officials said workers were performing foundation work and had been manually digging a tunnel beneath one of the apartment buildings when the surrounding dirt gave way, causing a collapse that trapped the 29-year-old worker beneath the structure. Dallas Fire-Rescue personnel, including members of the department's Urban Search and Rescue team, spent several hours working to reach the victim. A specialized trench rescue support truck was also brought to the scene to assist with rescue operations. Despite extensive efforts, officials later confirmed that the worker died at the scene. Representatives from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and National Trench Safety were present as authorities began investigating the circumstances surrounding the collapse. The identity of the worker has not been released. The collapse occurred during foundation work beneath the apartment building. The cause of the incident remains under investigation.

The Moment Supporters Learn Karmelo Anthony Is Guilty of Murder

MCKINNEY, Texas — Emotions ran high outside the Collin County Courthouse on Tuesday after a jury found 19-year-old Karmelo Anthony guilty of murder in the fatal stabbing of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf during a high school track meet in Frisco in April 2025. The jury reached its verdict after less than three hours of deliberations, rejecting Anthony’s claim that he acted in self-defense during the confrontation. Anthony now faces a sentence ranging from five years to 99 years under Texas law. Outside the courthouse, supporters of Anthony gathered awaiting the jury’s decision. When news of the guilty verdict spread through the crowd, many reacted with frustration and disappointment. Several supporters voiced concerns about the outcome of the trial and the composition of the jury, while others called for justice on Anthony’s behalf. Tensions remained high throughout the afternoon as groups on opposing sides of the case gathered near the courthouse. Law enforcement maintained a visible presence around the courthouse grounds as crowds reacted to the verdict. Following the verdict, the trial moved into the punishment phase, where jurors will determine Anthony’s sentence.
